Playing pieces

bullet Free   The Imaginative Strategist - With a wealth of material and clearly the preferred site for abundance, variety and quality, The Imaginative Strategist has a large selection of free-to-download images for PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader. A coherent selection of attractive counter sheets is provided covering early war, late war, and the Pacific theatre as well as Finnish, Polish, Rumanian and other minor nationalities. This site is clearly an enabler of the revival of interest in the classic PanzerBlitz franchise.

bullet Free   Greg's PanzerBlitz Site - Gregory Moore's PanzerBlitz/Panzer Leader site is organised by period and Greg has provided not only free-to-download counter images for PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader but also detailed organisational charts expressed in unit counters for major combatant formations of the periods he has already completed including early war and Western Desert theatres.  The value of these charts is hard to overstate when assembling a new scenario from historical data; a truly excellent site sharing synergy with The Imaginative Strategist and a close second in usefulness for variant counters.

bullet Free   Mike's Wargame Page - Mike's PanzerBlitz/Panzer Leader site is dedicated to preserving PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader variants originally published in Avalon Hill's gaming magazine The General.  Each of more than twenty free-to-download compressed files contains variously counter images, maps, rules and scenarios for PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader. The value of these variants as a reflection of the popularity and evolution of the franchise is exceeded only by the enjoyment of playing out  the additional historical and hypothetical scenarios; another excellent site made possible by the good will and effort of an enthusiastic gamer.

bulletPatrick Storto's PanzerBlitz Site - Patricks's site offers a wide selection of mail order, unmounted, laser printed counter sheets, including generic units from The General, and units from The Boardgamer. Some of these are available elsewhere at no cost but are provided here as pre-printed counter sheets of uniform colour, design and quality. Generally very affordable.

bulletCamelot Games Panzer Leader Counters - (Unreviewed) Camelot Games provides a range of counters for PanzerBlitz/Panzer Leader starting at USD$5 each. Notably these include variant counters from The General with new artwork. This link invokes a saved search so expect sluggish loading.

bullet2XS Industries PanzerBlitz and Panzer Store - (Unreviewed) 2XS Industries provides a range of additional counters for PanzerBltz and Panzer Leader priced from USD$14 to USD$30.

Map-boards

bullet Free   The Imaginative Strategist - With excellent quality map-boards for both PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader.  The winter versions of the classic PanzerBlitz originals are particularly satisfying. There is also a section with additional and reworked boards for Arab-Israeli Wars by Douglas Swanson.

bulletPatrick Storto's PanzerBlitz Site - Patrick's site offers by mail order a number of affordable colour printed but unmounted maps for PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader in the style of the original games.

bulletCamelot Games North Africa Maps - (Unreviewed) Camelot Games provides a range of Western Desert map-boards for PanzerBlitz/Panzer Leader starting at USD$20 each. This link invokes a saved search so expect sluggish loading.

bullet2XS Industries PanzerBlitz and Panzer Store - (Unreviewed) 2XS Industries provides a range of additional map-boards for PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader at USD$14 each.

Scenarios

bullet Free   The Imaginative Strategist - Again a leader with aftermarket scenarios for PanzerBlitz including a number of imaginative scenarios using new Imaginative Strategist game map-boards by Alan R Arvold, Michael Flagiello, Ward McBurney, Barrie McTaggart.  Also offered are a set of additional classic scenarios numbered 14-25 in original card format by Robert D Harmon.

bullet Free   Mike's Wargame Page - See Mike's entry above for additional scenarios for PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader as originally published in The General. These scenarios cover alternate theatres, additional variant troops and hypothetical post-war as well as historical engagements.

bullet Free   Little Wars - Brian Train's well known Desert Leader and Steppe Leader variants.  Excellent content with very basic presentation; a single versatile but monochrome counter sheet and the respective documents. Patrick Storto offers a cleaned up mail order version of both variants.

bullet Free   PanzerBlitz: Situation 13 - Tom Oleson's original article from The Wargamer's Guide to Panzerblitz.  Not a scenario, per se, but a point value system for PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader units for players wishing to create their own scenarios with balanced forces. Also a handy list of PanzerBlitz/Panzer Leader units including factor values and number supplied in each game.

bulletPatrick Storto's PanzerBlitz Site - Patrick's site offers a significant number of mail order expansions for PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader including numerous variants from The General, Tom Williams and other sources (including reproductions of Brian Train's Desert Leader and Steppe Leader variants.)  These contain, variously, unmounted counters sheets, rules and/or scenarios. Some of these are available elsewhere at no cost but are provided here with pre-printed counter sheets of uniform colour, design and quality along with necessary supporting pages and tables. Generally very affordable.

bulletToshach Miniatures - (Unreviewed) TCME provides two interesting modern download-only expansions for the franchise under the generic title Tactical Combat in the Middle East with titles Battlefield Iraq and Stryker Brigade.  These include rulebook, counters, maps and scenarios and are priced at USD$10 and USD$6 respectively.  From their website:
Tactical Combat in the Middle East: Battlefield Iraq is not a complete game. You will need a copy of PanzerBlitz, Panzer Leader or The Arab and Israeli Wars in order to play.
bullet2XS Industries - (Unreviewed) 2XS Industries provides a range of additional scenarios using their own counters and maps for PanzerBlitz at USD$10 each.

bulletVAIPA Products - A number of mail order expansions containing variously mounted counters, rules and scenarios for PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader including Pokhorakova, a Kursk scenario by Alan R Arvold, SS Leader, which provides SS leadership rules and mounted counters along with scenarios, and Lend Lease, an expansion to these expansions.

Rules and addenda

bullet Free   Brian McCue, Double-Blind PanzerBlitz Rules, Kentaurus.com, 1998.
Unreviewed but innovative rules addition for playing "blind" on two identical PanzerBlitz map-boards.

bullet Free   Mike's Wargame Page - See Mike's entry above for additional rules within PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader variants as originally published in The General. Rules for paratroopers, helicopters and expanded tactical air support are available along with scenarios and variant counters.

bullet2XS Industries - (Unreviewed) 2XS Industries provides for USD$15 what is apparently a rule revision for PanzerBlitz titled PanzerBlitz for Smarties.

History of the PanzerBlitz franchise

bulletAlan R Arvold, An Informal History of the Development of PanzerBlitz, Imaginative Strategist
This 'insider' article is an essential read for those interested in the origin, design and sometimes tumultuous development of PanzerBlitz.

bulletMichael Dorosh, Tactical Game 3, The Tactical Wargamer
An excellent, well referenced overview of the game that led to PanzerBlitz.

bullet Free   Tac 3 Original and Revamp, ConSimWorld.com, Cannot recommend too highly the TAC 3_original and revamp.zip download on this resource page which contains the entire original TSG (Test Series Games) edition of PanzerBlitz's immediate predecessor. After resizing the map 96% and saving to JPEG it came out perfectly down at the local print shop; and in colour too. Original rules and units are in a PDF file as well but PanzerBlitz owners can use their existing counters, rules and charts to play the original Tac 3 scenarios. This game gives a whole new perspective to the franchise when played on a roomy map with open terrain. Kudos to whomever spent the time and energy on updating this.

bulletMike's Wargame Page, Index of Wargaming Magazines - Featuring The General, this index of issues gives type, length and title of articles and associated games.

Opportunity Fire
The original PanzerBlitz was marred by a rules shortfall which excluded firing at moving units. But can this oversight be remedied without making things worse?
